
In the latest round-up from Series 2 of the Volts, we focus on Northern England, as the race heats up for places in the regional finals.
Northern England is one of the powerhouses of darts – and the fact more than 300 players there have competed in Series 2 of the Volts underlines just how competitive a region it is.
With a few events to play, the race to finish in the top 32 and qualify for the Northern regional finals remains intense, with players such as Bobby Porter (33rd in the rankings), Mason Bell (36th), Aubin Buller (37th) and Seth Paterson (42nd) all either winning events or reaching finals in the past week.
Porter put himself right in the mix to qualify for the regional finals by winning the penultimate event in Oldham, winning his quarter, semi and final in deciding legs, with his victory over Paterson in the final including checkouts of 96 and 80.
Way out on top is George Crowe, who added to his points tally by reaching the final in Middlesbrough on Tuesday. He was beaten 3-2 by Peter Clark, who is also sure of his place in the regional finals in Sheffield next Saturday.
Another player heading through to the finals is Lucas Vose, who won in both Bridlington and York to maintain his fine recent form.
In Bridlington, he defeated Lewis Williams 3-0 in the final, while in York he claimed the honours with a 3-2 win over Harrison Meggitt.
Owen Thompson was the winner in Keighley, beating Freddie Thompson 3-1 despite a brilliant 118 checkout from the runner-up, and in Nelson, Archie Chippendale prevailed with a 3-1 win over Archie Bracey, despite Bracey winning the opening leg with a 107 checkout.
Joshua Hamlett hauled himself into the qualification places with by winning the Middlewich event. He beat Mason Bell 3-1 after winning deciding legs against Finley Ellison and Max Hickson in his semi-final and quarter-final.
Olly Iredale has played himself into a stronger position to qualify by winning in Seaham, beating Joe Pearson 3-1 in the final, while Joshua Watson-Slack moved up the table with a 3-0 win over Vose in the Sheffield final, sealing the win with his first dart at tops.
Buller boosted his chances of qualifying by reaching the Worksop final, where he lost 3-1 to Joshua Skidmore in a high-quality final. Both players had earlier impressed in the semis, averaging north of 72 in their 3-0 wins over Bentley-Quinn Fowler and Nathan Beeston, respectively.
In Leeds, Maks Sajek tasted glory, seeing off the challenge of Olly Iredale 3-1 in the final, despite a 15-dart leg and 76 checkout from the runner-up.
In St Helens, there was a win for Tobias Bunting – son of PDC star Stephen – who beat Will Parry 3-1 in the final.
