In the latest round-up from Series 2 of the Volts, we focus on Republic of Ireland, Northern Ireland and Scotland, as the race heats up for places in the regional finals.
Jack Caulfield leads the way in the Republic of Ireland & Northern Ireland group – but it’s the race for qualification spots where the real excitement is, after Sean McDermott won an event to move within striking distance of the finals.
McDermott triumphed in Fettercairn to move within one point of the qualification places, beating Scott Doyle 3-2 in the final and averaging north of 70.
McDermott is now only one point off the all-important top 32, after producing some excellent finishes when it mattered in the final. He opened with a 122 checkout, restored his lead with a 51, and sealed the win with an 82.
He had earlier beaten Evan Donnelly 3-2 in the semis and Coby Burke 3-1 in the quarters, after topping his group with wins against Max Gallagher and Liam Redmond.
In Letterkenny, Jack Porter produced some stunning darts to pass the 100-point mark in the table. He beat Charlie Doherty 3-0 in the final, averaging 86.71 in the process, including eight scores of 100-plus.
Porter had earlier averaged 85.08 in his 3-0 semi-final win over Jackson Timoney, and was unbeaten during the group stage too as he claimed a thoroughly deserved event win.
Another player heading in the right direction is Callum Ward, who triumphed in Naul, beating Tom Smith 3-2 in the final. The match went with throw, Ward clinching the win with a 63 checkout.
He also had to show character to get through the semi-final, beating James Murphy 3-2, and was a 3-1 winner over Alan Robinson Hammond in the quarters, having earlier dominated his group.
Logan Belshaw is another top-10 player in the Irish rankings who won an event during the week. He took the honours in Lisburn, beating Arthur McKeever 3-0 in the final. There was less than one point between their averages – but Belshaw hit his doubles (including an 80 checkout) to seal the title.
Jamie Farrell maintained his charge towards the regional finals by taking the honours in Cork. He beat Allen Moore 3-0 in the final, averaging 73.92 in the process, to consolidate his place in the top 10.
Other event winners were Mason Murray, Shane Hogan and Tyler O’Connor.
Murray took the spoils in Cabra, beating Fionn Bissett 3-2 in the final, having been 2-0 down.
In Kilkenny, Hogan was the victor after averaging 80.52 in a 3-0 win against Fionn O’Connor in the final. Hogan took out 32, 98 and 32 in a hugely impressive performance, after earlier beating Ryan Phelan 3-2 in a high-quality semi-final, in which he produced a 104 finish.
O’Connor was the winner in Waterford, producing a stunning average of 90.18 as he beat George Fitzgerald 3-0 in the final. O’Connor kicked off the final with two 180s and an 11-dart leg, as he stated his intent – before going to enjoy a comfortable win. He didn’t drop a match all day, winning all of his group matches.
In Scotland, overall leader Alfie Robertson was beaten 3-0 in the Kirkcaldy final by Connor Turner, who is up to third place.
Turner got off to a flying start when he took out 116 to clinch the opening leg – and didn’t look back. He didn’t drop a leg in the knockout stage.
