VOLTS ROUND-UP – SOUTH WEST & SOUTH EAST
The first season of the JDC Volts is really starting to take shape as we race toward the regional finals in late June and throughout July. In our latest round-up from around the country, we focus on South West and South East England…
In the South West, the race to top the rankings is incredibly close, with Arthur Alden victorious in Frome as he built a four-point lead.
Alden topped the group-play without losing a match, and then raced through his semi-final and final, beating Joshua Bennett 2-0 with an 83.50 average before clinching the event with a 2-0 win over Ryan Knight in the final.
In Plymouth, James Wallace did his hopes of topping the group no harm at all. He won the latest event there and is in second place behind Alden with one event in Devon still to play.
Wallace topped his group, before throwing a 76.88 average in a 3-1 quarter-final win against Bradley Burnard. He then saw off Aidan Fowle 3-0 in the semis and beat Kyle Chudleigh 3-1 in the final.
Also climbing the rankings was Jack Kempster, who is only nine points behind Alden after winning the Bristol event on Sunday.
Kempster won both of his group matches, before seeing off Harry Turner 3-0 in the quarter-finals. He then won a last-leg decider to beat Harry White in the semis, before overcoming Shay Goff 3-1 in the final.
Over in Radstock, Woody Jewell emerged victorious from the latest event, coming out on top of his group and then beating Josh Smith 3-0 in the last eight.
He then beat Grayson Jarvis – a recent winner in Frome – to set up a meeting with Max Barraclough in the final, which Jewell won 3-0. Barraclough’s route to the final saw him beat overall South West leader Alden in the quarters.
In the South East, Jack Johnson continued to pile up the points as he triumphed in Sidcup.
He finished second in his group behind Jack Ingram – but later got revenge in the final, winning 3-1 with a 77.84 average.
Johnson had earlier beaten Alfie Jenner 3-0 in the quarters with a 76.42 average and Taylor Harding 3-1 in the semis while averaging 80.92.
In Wallingford, Reggie Price was the latest winner, beating Bernard Mendy 3-2 in the final, after earlier defeating Leo Royall and Harley-Jay Sanders.
The top 32 players from each region compete in the regional finals in a best-of-seven legs seeded knockout format, with the winner from each region qualifying for the national finals in September.
