VOLTS ROUND-UP – EAST & WEST MIDLANDS
The first ever JDC Volts season is heating up – and the rankings table in the East Midlands makes for fascinating reading after the latest round of action.
Only five points separate four players at the top of the table, with Tommy Thompson’s win at the Great Yarmouth event giving him a four-point lead over Ben Schiller and Addison Hefferon.
Schiller was one of the week’s biggest winners, claiming the title in Soham and also reaching the Sutton Bridge final.
Addison Hefferon is level on points with Schiller, with Callum Mitchell fourth after he triumphed in Rushden, beating Bobby Vickors in the final.
Table-topper Thompson was victorious in Great Yarmouth, producing a 76.42 average to beat Preston Ingram 3-0 in the final, after a 3-1 win over Oscar Field in the semi-finals.
Thompson, who had beaten Rambo Learmouth 3-1 in the quarters, actually lost two of his six group matches – but he gradually found his rhythm during the event and ended up a deserved winner.
In Rushden, Mitchell beat Vickors 3-2 in the final of a high-quality event, with Hefferon losing 3-2 to Vickors in the semis despite averaging 84.91.
Schiller proved that playing in multiple events in a week can be a recipe for success. He picked up a bucketload of points by winning in Soham – beating Spencer Fage 3-2 in the final – as well as reaching the Sutton Bridge final, where he lost 3-1 to George Fenn.
In Mansfield, Conor Rourke was the weekly winner, showing his character by beating George Skinner 3-2 in the final, and winning all three of his knockout matches by a single leg.
Over in the West Midlands, Jake Shipley has a commanding lead at the top of the rankings – which he extended by triumphing in the Halesowen event.
Shipley now has 96 points – a lead of 47 points over his closest pursuer, George Edwards. Shipley beat Jack Turner 3-0 in the final, having won his semi-final 3-1 against his brother Alfie.
Edwards was also an event winner, taking the spoils in Rugby, where he beat Alfie Bracey 3-1 in the final, while the winner in Rugeley was Jake Martin, who saw off Harvey-Lee Nelson-Harris 3-2 in the final. Nelson-Harris is third in the rankings, six points behind Edwards.
