Archie Self produced the performance of the evening as he kicked off the new Junior Power League season with a 103.78 average in his 5-3 win over Tergel Khurelkhuu.
The 16-year-old came from 2-0 and 3-2 down to stun his Mongolian opponent, winning his legs in 13, 15, 12, 13 and 13 darts.
Tergel broke throw in the opening leg, before holding with a 103 checkout to double his lead. Self left 24 after 12 darts to claim his first leg, and then broke throw to level.
But when Tergel broke back in 12 darts (177, 134, 98, 92), the Englishman looked in a spot of bother.
However, he reeled off three legs in a row, breaking back with a 12-darter of his own (140, 140, 140, 81), held in 13 and then broke again 13 to seal the win.
It was a statement win for Self as the JPL returned at a new venue, Hangar61 in Bristol, in front of a live audience and with a full-production live stream.
Jack Nankervis tops the boys’ standings after a 5-2 win over Lex Paeshuyse, with the Cornishman producing a 145 finish. The only other winner in the boys’ event on the evening was Christian Ennis, who only secured his place in the JPL by winning the qualifier earlier in the day. He beat Jack Johnson 5-3 having trailed 2-1 after being broken in the third leg.
Lucy Shepherd leads the way in the girls’ JPL, taking advantage of defending champion Rebecca Allen’s opening-night absence to record a win and a draw.
She beat Yazmine Ruck-Havard 4-1 – and was close to victory over qualifier Kirsten Casley, leading 3-3 before drawing 3-3.
