West Midlands Darts Academy gets support from two local ambassadors.
West Midlands Darts Academy have gained two high profile ambassadors in the names of Jamie Hughes and Scott Baker, who will now attend the Tipton based academy on a regular basis giving the attendees the best chance of achieving their darting dreams.
Both Hughes and Baker are already regular visitors at the academy, having their children joined a few months ago.
It is not unusual for the JDC academies to have PDC professional players visit for the evening, the likes of Alan Warriner-Little and Joe Murnan have visited Blackburn academy in the past. But having recently gained their PDC Tour cards, Hughes and Baker are two players on the up.
Martyn Harper, head coach at West Midlands Academy told me us: “I saw that Alan Warriner-Little and Joe Murnan had been down to the Blackburn academy on a couple of occasions, so I thought ‘you know what’, I can equal that! Jamie and Scott were regular attendants at the academy anyway because they both have young kids attending themselves.
“They are pretty much there every week. Obviously, they’ve both got their tour cards with the PDC so there may be busy at times, but they still make time to attend the academy on Sunday’s, even with Players Championship events on in Wigan.”
Harper believes that having the pair down on a regular basis creates a fantastic buzz around the place, the perfect place for the juniors to hone the darting talent: “In a way it’s the normal thing for them to be there because in there Super League days they were always down there on a Wednesday, it’s nothing out of the ordinary really. But for newcomers who haven’t met Scott and Jamie it’s a really big thing.”
Scott ‘The Mod’ Baker recently reached the semi-finals of his PDC ProTour debut having won his Tour Card back in January, while Hughes enjoyed a sensational year on the Challenge Tour in 2018 to clear his pathway into the big leagues.
